According to Quartz Reports NASA just paid Mechanical Engineer Anjan Contractors and his company Systems and Research materials coporation, $125,000 to create a "universal food synthesizer" for 3-D printed food.
NASA believes that a machine like Contractor's would help astronauts on their long flights where traditional foods won't keep. In future, the machine may also allow restaurants and dieters to customize food to meet certain calorie count and taste preferences.
